Service Areas vs. Physical Address: Which Should You Choose?

Aug 3, 2026 | Google Business Profile, Knowledge, SEO Knowledge

One of the most common questions business owners ask when setting up or optimizing their Google Business Profile is whether they should display a physical address or operate as a service area business. The answer depends on how your business serves customers. Choosing the wrong setup can create confusion for customers, violate Google’s guidelines, and even impact your visibility in local search results. Understanding the difference will help ensure your business is represented accurately while maximizing your local SEO opportunities.

What Is a Physical Address?

A physical address is displayed on your Google Business Profile and tells customers they can visit your location during business hours. This setup is best for businesses that regularly welcome customers into their office, storefront, or showroom. Examples include restaurants, retail stores, medical offices, law firms, salons, and other businesses with staffed locations where customers receive services in person.

Displaying a physical address makes it easier for customers to find your business, get directions, and visit your location. It also helps build trust because customers know exactly where your business is located. However, Google requires that your location be staffed during your listed business hours. Virtual offices, P.O. boxes, coworking spaces without permanent staffing, and temporary locations generally do not qualify.

What Is a Service Area Business?

A service area business travels to its customers instead of having customers visit its location. Examples include plumbers, electricians, HVAC contractors, landscapers, roofers, cleaning companies, locksmiths, and many home service providers. Instead of displaying a street address, Google allows these businesses to hide their address and define the cities, ZIP codes, or geographic areas they serve.

This gives potential customers a better understanding of your service territory while protecting your privacy if you operate from your home or another non-public location. It’s important to remember that adding dozens of service areas does not automatically improve your rankings throughout those locations. Google still considers factors like relevance, proximity, reviews, website content, and overall authority when determining local search visibility.

Can You Have Both?

In some cases, yes. If your business has a legitimate, staffed office where customers regularly visit, you can display your physical address while also defining your service areas. For example, a landscaping company might have an office where customers can meet with staff while also serving clients throughout several surrounding towns. The key is making sure your Google Business Profile accurately reflects how your business actually operates. Misrepresenting your location or displaying an address where customers cannot visit could put your profile at risk of suspension.

Which Option Is Better for SEO?

Neither option is inherently better. Google’s goal is to provide users with accurate information. Choosing the setup that matches your business model is far more important than trying to gain an SEO advantage.

Businesses with physical locations benefit from appearing as destinations customers can visit. Service area businesses benefit from accurately defining where they work while maintaining compliance with Google’s guidelines.

The strongest local SEO strategy extends far beyond your address settings. High-quality reviews, optimized website content, accurate business information, local backlinks, consistent business listings, and an active Google Business Profile all play a much larger role in improving visibility.

Getting It Right Matters

Your Google Business Profile is often the first impression potential customers have of your business. An inaccurate address, poorly defined service areas, or an improperly configured profile can create confusion and reduce customer confidence before they ever contact you.

At SC Digital, we help businesses optimize every aspect of their local online presence, from Google Business Profile setup and verification to local SEO, website optimization, and review strategies.
